Coming from a parent myself teaching your kids to say no to drugs can be a hard discussion to have. You ask yourself how am I going to bring this subject up to them or is it the right time to have this talk? You may even think oh well they are not quite old enough to understand I'll just wait another year when it is an appropriate age. Well that is the wrong thing to do. There really is no right age to talk to them. As soon as they can start to talk and comprehend things is the right time or at least that is how I see it. Just stay consistent with talking to them about how bad drugs are and the things that can and WILL happen to them if they do try drugs.
Just remember that drugs are all around and one way or another they may be confronted with this situation. If that should happen then what do you think is going to occur? The obvious reason they are going to do it because the child was not informed about drugs. Of course as children, preteens and teenagers they are very curious about new things introduced to them. This may prompt them to try it because their curiosity has over taken the train of thought. It is sad to say but drugs are at the tips of peoples fingers. Even in the child's school, down the street corner, in places they go to hang out and maybe even in their homes.
When a human encounters peer pressure they feel as though now they have to do it just so they do not look bad or others will think that they are chickens. We do know that when we are called names this only adds fuel to the fire. Now how do they handle this? By doing what the other wants them to do to prove that they are not a chicken or whatever they are being called.
The best way to teach them is to just come out and be honest about all of it. If you hide things and they find out then they may be even more curious as to why you would hide information from them. If you are afraid that talking to them about drugs will get them wanting to try them then get that thought out of your head, because i am sure when you do find the right words and maybe even show them pictures and videos of what can happen to them they will not be thinking of how it will feel they will be scared out of their minds from doing them.
Remember when you are discussing this situation to them you explain the difference between medications that have been prescribed to them are okay to take as directed and they are called drugs as well but they are the kind that make you better and to never ever take someones medications for any reason at all. Talk to them as often as you can about drugs and really emphasize how bad they are. What they will do and how fast they can lose everything and every one in their life because of the use of drugs. From smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, taking others medications or other street drugs address all of them.
It is okay to scare your child about drugs but be honest the whole time about it. Again be an open book with them and let them know that at any point if they have questions or would like to sit down and talk about it with you that they can do so. Tell them that you encourage the fact that they come talk to you at anytime. If they should tell you that someone has approached them about drugs never yell at them about it. Talk to them about the situation. Ask them how they handled it and if they feel good with their decision.
