Are you struggling with a child that will not stop wetting the bed and you just do not know what to do about it? This can be a frustrating situation, but the one thing that you never want to do is yell at the child for it or punish them. Basically you want to try hard not to be negative towards them in the least bit, this may make them even more fearful and deter them from trying to help the situation. Have you ever heard of the saying that patience is a virtue well it is the truth and especially with a child.

Quite a bit of children even though they are potty trained will still wet the bed while they nap or at bed time up until the age of 5. The reasons for this may be the child has a small bladder and can not hold it while they rest or the bladder fills up to much and they are a deep sleeper and can not feel when they have to go ,causing them to have an accident.

Why Children Wet The Bed

This is not something that children do intentionally, it may be a medical issue or as said above that they just are a heavy sleeper. When they wake up and notice what they have done I think is a punishment enough for them. Imagine how they must feel when something like this happens. Then when they have to tell you what has happened is total embarrassment to them.

Other reasons that a child may wet the bed is that one or both of the parents had the same problems growing up, they may have an infection in the bladder, a nerve disease, stress, depression, problems at school, a new sibling or the fact that you may be trying to train them to early. So before you jump to conclusions the first and foremost thing you will want to do is get to the root of the problem, then try and find a solution that works best for you and most off the child. I am going to give you a list of things that may help you try and stop your child from wetting the bed

Practical Methods To Stop Your Child From Wetting Their Bed

  1. Do not give them anything to drink 2 hours before they are ready to go to bed
  2. Take them to the doctors and see if it may be a medical condition of some sort
  3. Have the child use the bathroom as much as possible before they have to go to bed
  4. Get books and movies for your child to look at and go online and find games they can play that deal with bed wetting
  5. Try bladder training. By this I mean if the child says they have to go t the bathroom make them wait for 15 minutes before they go, this is called stretching the bladder. By doing this they are training the bladder to hold more urine and for a longer time
  6. Try getting an alarm or buzzer that will go off at the first drop of urine that hits it, this will then wake the child up to go and use the bathroom.
  7. This would be a last resort for me to use but there are different kinds of medications out there that either slow the production of urine down or relax the bladder so it can hold more urine.
  8. If the child has a dry day make sure to praise them as much as you can tell them they have done a very good job and reward them with something small.
  9. Do not give them anything that has caffeine in it. caffeine will tend to make them urinate even more then usual. Plus caffeine is not good for a child in general anyways
  10. Make a game out of it if at all possible.
  11. I am not sure if they have them but if so get tapes or cd,s that they can listen to at night when they sleep that may help them with it.
  12. Try to have a talk with them about it and ask them if they know that they are doing it. Try discussing things with them if they are able to understand what you are talking about
