You may find it difficult to handle a child that has ADHD. This is Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. This is a neurobehavioral disorder. ADHD affects 3 to 5 percent of all American children. This gets in the way of a child trying to focus on different task. ADHD makes it hard for them to do things that require focusing for a long time, such as school, watching a movie, homework, reading, writing and other daily chores and activities. Ways you can tell that your child may have ADHD are things like constantly moving around, talking a lot, not finishing things they start to do, not paying attention and no organization.
There are different medications that you can try with them. I know as a parent you do not want to dose your child up with medications. Sometimes it is necessary to get your child going down the right path. Before you resort to medications though you may want to ask the doctors if there are any other techniques that may be tried before resorting to that. Things like trying to place your child in classes that are smaller so they can try to focus more. Having the parent work with the child on things one on one. Possible bring a tutor in the home, and even try therapy or counseling. Now if these are not working by themselves then they will try the child on medications such as Ritalin or Dexadrine. These are stimulants that lessen the impulsivity and hyperactivity. It will also increase the child's attention span.
Do not forget even though the child has been put on medication does not mean that you should stop working with the child on different things. You should keep them in their counseling or therapy classes this will give them that extra boost of help that I am sure they need from you and others. In the long run there really is no cure for this and very few outgrow ADHD, however as they get older they find ways to get around it and work with it. Below are some great activities for kids with ADHD.
I hope my list of different activites for kids with ADHD has helped you with your child and questions that you may have had, or even concerns for the child. Now that you know different things you can do with them go out and have a blast with your child. I guarantee you will see progress in them, as i said it may not be an instant result but all good things take time in life.
