This is an image of a bunch of letter blocksTrying to teach your child their letters and numbers, but finding this to be quite a challenge? Just take your time with this, you may overwhelm yourself and the child as well and result in an unhappy child that does not want anything to do with what you are trying to teach them. What you want to do is try hard to make a fun and interesting game out of it. All kids love games and playing. Teaching kids different things should not always have to be just the basics teaching and that's that. I am going to help you with a list of different games that may get your child interested in learning their numbers and letters.

Example Games That Teach Kids Letters & Numbers

  1. You can get a bunch of their favorite toys and place cards on them with numbers on them, have them all in order and go down the list with the child. Have them try it them self as well. then after they have done some counting let them have a few minutes to play with the toys you set out as a reward.
  2. You can also try this with snacks such as raisins, m&ms, cookies or whatever they may like. Then here is the fun part, as they are eating them have them, count as they eat them. Then ask them how many are left each time they eat one.
  3. Find different things around the house that have spots, stripes, shapes or anything else that they can count and see how many stripes a zebra has on them or how many polka dots are on their pillow.
  4. You can go online and find different counting games and ask them to teach you how to play. If they do not know then tell them we shall learn this together.
  5. You can go to the dollar store and get flash cards and make a game with the flash cards.
  6. Play board games that require counting spaces, counting dice or anything else that has to do with counting numbers.
  7. You can go out and get different books that deal with counting and numbers and ask the child if they can read the book to you and you will help them if needed.

Teaching kids letters

  • Get books that have to do with the alphabet and have them read it to you
  • You can go out and get any kind of building blocks that have the alphabet on one side and an object on the other have them tell you what the object is and after the letter on the other side, then you guys can build something together out of them.
  • If you have a sand box or even dirt near you you and the child can take sticks or your fingers and write letters in the sand and say what they are
  • Write letters on paper real lightly or with the broken lines and have the child try to trace it and tell you what it is
  • You can get clay or play doh and make letters out of it
  • Spell their name out and see if they can tell you each letter that is in the name
  • Get those refrigerator magnets and play letter games with them.

Teaching Kids Numbers

This is an image of numbersThese are just a few methods that you can try with your child. Do not eave the child alone doing this though, if they see that you are interested as well this may be very encouraging to them to want to play more and learn. Some kids learn faster then others do so do not fret if your child is a little more behind then they should be.
