This is a tough question to answer because many doctors say one thing while some say another and than there is your thoughts as a parent. You are the one that is around them all the time to see how they react to different things. For instance if you have finished feeding the baby and a half hour later they are crying and want more that means the milk they are getting just isn't enough to keep them full for long. Now you can continue to give them more and more milk but all this will do is make them either throw up or become constipated from all of the milk.
I started my children on cereal roughly four month or so after they were born. They instantly took to it and they both slept through the night better. This was because they has fuller bellies longer. If you are going to give them cereal i would suggest you go with rice or barley for now and hold off on the oatmeal till they are a little older. Oatmeal is thicker and can be more difficult to swallow.
While it is true that a mother often feels she knows what is best for her child there are still things you should discuss with your family Pediatrician. Starting your baby on cereal is one of this important discussions. The switch from only milk to a solid food can be hard on some babies. There is also a chance that they could be allergic to certain foods. Since they have never had them before there is no way of knowing ahead of time of your child's body will react to the new food. Most doctor's will tell you to try one type of cereal such as rice or barley at a time. This way if an allergic reaction occurs you can be sure which one is the problem food. While all babies spit up it is unusual for a child to throw up after each meal or even while eating. These could be a sign of digestive problems or the babies way of telling you it's body is not ready for solid food yet. It is best to tell your family doctor and get his advice on the problem.
