Meadowsweet Herb Garden in Soulseat LochThere are plenty of different types of herb gardens if you like herbs. Me, I love the smell of fresh herbs. Making your own herb garden is very beneficial. You can save money at the grocery store by growing your own garden of herbs. And honestly how fresh are they really? We do not know. But we do know they have sat in bottles and boxes on a shelf for a while. As to where you can go right into your backyard pick what you need let it dry out and use in whatever you may be making. The smell and taste will be out of this world! That and making the garden is another nice and relaxing thing if you're looking for some you time. When it comes time to pick them you will have some of the nicest smells coming from your yard.

You can do just your basic herb garden or you can do an aromatic garden which these types of herbs are used for adding to perfumes, household products and anything else that needs fragrances. The definition of herb is a seed giving plant that does not have wood for a stem that will die after it is done blooming. Also any plant that has leaves, seed or even flowers that you can use for flavoring foods and making things smell nice, along with use for medical things. I will post a list up of a few different kinds of herbs you can grow and how to care for them.

Examples of Good Herbs for your Garden

Basil - T his plant likes the sun and should be started from a seed if you are doing them outside. Basil is a very fragile plant. They do not care about the soil they live in as long a it has some moisture and drainage. They like slightly warm water and it helps them grow better. When they have reached 6" tall pinch the top off so they get more leaf growth. If you do not use t his plant regularly then you may want to prune it so this keeps stems moist and tender.

Rosemary - This herb likes sandy soil the best. Rosemary likes sunny and sheltered weather. But it can take sever frost as long as it isn't windy and real wet too. It is not recommended that you try to grow this from a seed it wakes at least 3 years for them to get to a good size, and it as real tough to do so. They do not like to have their roots exposed so when you plant them do not touch them. They do not take much maintenance. After they are placed in the soil, water them and that is it. They only need water when it is completely dry.

Garlic - This should be grown from the clove and not seeds. The seeds are much harder to grow then the clove. They like loose and drained soil. They like the cold so the best time to plant them is some time in autumn. When you are ready to plant them take apart the cloves and plant them with the top facing up. Plant them 2 to 3 inches deep. They need to be watered a great deal. They take quite a bit of time to grow as well they should be ready late summer. After you have dug them up they need to be hung to dry for about 2 weeks.

Parsley - They like cool climates to grow in. They like sunlight as well. They like well drained but moist soil. You have to keep them hydrated watering them one a week is good for them. You can put some mulch down to keeps in moisture, also apply a little fertilizer every 4 weeks or so. When ready to use just cut the outer stalks just above the ground level so you can still have more growth.
