Types Of Vegetable Gardens

Planting your very own vegetable gardens can take some time and effort to do, but in the end you can save so much money, you may even be able to sell what you grow to make some extra cash. Which we all know is a very big plus. There are many different vegetables you can plant. You will want to check some things out before you just go buying them and sticking them in the ground. When choosing the vegetables you want to plant you have to look at the time of season they have to be in, if they like sun or shade, what kind of soil or dirt is best for them, if they are indoor or out door and so on. Vegetable gardening can be time consuming so if you plan to do so make sure you can fit it around your schedule. Different Vegetables to Plant in your Garden

Eggplant - You want to start them inside 8 weeks before there will be the last frost outside. Then you want to take black plastic to keep the ground warm in a cooler environment. They grow better in rich and a little acidic but well drained soil. They thrive in hot weather; you want to have a row cover in cool weather to bring up the temperature around them. Eggplants need to be placed 24" apart in rows and 12" apart from one another. Also it is suggested that you put mulch around them to keep in the moisture and heat. They like to eat so another good suggestion is to make compost for them using old foods, dry leaves; fish heads, manure and soil mix it together and give it to them 2 times a month.

Potatoes - They are fairly easy to grow. They like cooler climates. Refrigerate the potato seeds till you are ready to use them. You want to plant them 2 weeks before your last frost date. 2 weeks before you are ready to use the seeds pull them out of the fridge and put them in a window sill that will be bright and warm for them for 1 week, this will break their dormancy and you know they will grow quickly when they are placed in the chilly soil.

Peppers - You should start to grow them inside 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost. You want to make compost for the peppers too, using manure, dry leaves, fish heads, and old foods from the kitchen. Peppers like hot weather so make sure you have a sunny area for them to grow in. You want to plant them spaced 18 to 24" apart in rows 24 to 36" apart. They do not like real wet soil so make sure it is just moist. You may also want to lay mulch down to avoid weeds and to keep the soil moist for them.

Carrots - They like lots of sun. They are cool weather veggies though. They do well in temperatures that are between 60 and 75 degrees. You want to compost the soil before planting them. You should plant them right into the ground; they do not do well indoors at all. They should be placed in rows 12 to 18" apart and one forth in depth. Do not water a lot until the seeds start to sprout. As they start to get bigger you want to trim the leafy green top to about 2 to 3 inches apart.

Cucumbers - They like warm weather. One plant can produce a lot of cucumbers so when you plant them space them out a little. They can grow in either bushes or vines. They need the soil to be at least 70 degrees for them to grow. Cucumbers should be spaced at 6 and half feet apart and should have 2 and half feet between them. They need a lot of water they have really deep roots so they take in more fluids. You should fertilize them about a week after they get their blossoms. And only do this every 3 to 4 weeks. They are ready to harvest about 55 to 70 days after they have been planted.

Green beans - They like full sun and heat. Do not plant them until every sign of frost is gone or they will not grow. You can start them indoors about 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. The best thing to use for them is peat pots. And have warm lighting for them. After they have gotten to be 4 inches you can put them outside. You should make sure the soil you use for them is well drained and has not had previous beans, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, or cabbage in it. You will need a pole for them spacing them 2 and half feet. Also give them some support with a trellis or lattice so they can climb up them. It takes about 55 days for them to ripen as soon as you see them you should harvest; this gives more time for them to keep growing.
