Removing a Tattoo is entirely possible, but can be a long and painful process. So before you ever get a tattoo you should think carefully about whether or not you may want to have your tattoo removed later in life. If you make a good decision, you should never have to worry about getting a tattoo removed. Nevertheless, the time may come when you decide you may need or want to get a tattoo removed. So if that is the case, or even if you are just thinking about getting a tattoo and want to know what tattoo removal is like, read on!

There are many different ways you can go about removing a tattoo. The best thing to do is research all of your tattoo removal options before just jumping to the very first one you come across. When tattoo removal came out years ago there would be scarring left on your body from this procedure and was extremely painful. They have new ways now that are less painful and leave minimal to no scarring. Most often, medical insurance will not pay for this to be done and believe me it is not cheap to have this done. Before the laser method came out in the 80s people used all kinds of other methods for tattoo removal.

Ways to Remove a Tattoo

  1. Dermabrasion tattoo removal - this method was very painful and left a lot of scarring. This is where they took a wire brush or wire fraise and sanded the skin, taking the top layer of skin off some times even the second if it is needed.
  2. Salabrasion removal- This is where a salt solution was made up and it removed the pigmentation from the skin, this method at times was used with the dermabrasion method and found to be very unpopular.
  3. Cryosurgery - This is where the area of the skin that was tattooed is frozen making that area completely numb then removal was then done.
  4. Excision - This method is really disturbing to me and just sounds really painful. On top of it you are left with scarring. This is where a dermatologist goes in with a scalpel and cuts the tattoo out, if the tattoo is to big then they do a skin transplant, this is when they take skin from another part of your body and place it over top of the tattoo.
  5. Scarification - This is where an acid solution is made up then put on the tattooed area. The acid eats the tattoo away but leaves scarring in that area. Not very many people like this method very much.
  6. Camouflaging - This is where they inject the skins surface that has been tattooed, with new pigments. This covers the area or makes a new pattern to it, but it does not look real at all because it does not have the translucence that the natural skin has.
  7. Laser - This is the most popular way to go about getting a tattoo removed these days. This is where they take a machine that use highly concentrated light pulses that break down the ink into tiny fragments. This procedure most often times does not work in just 1 sitting the more you go back the better the tattoo disappears. But also in turn the more you go back the more damage you are doing to the area of skin. It will cause blistering and big scabs, which in turn cause scarring. This procedure is painful; people say it kind of feels like being hit with hot grease.
  8. At home tattoo removal creams - i have never seen this used before, but there are a lot of different creams and home solutions you can buy and try to use. The outcome may not be what you are looking for though.
